Women Leading
the Way
Supporting women entrepreneurs and hosts, as well as consulting with female members of communities helps us identify challenges and solutions which truly uplift and empower. In a traditional society, women have often been hidden in the shadows, and it is our mission to listen and support them to build more resilient societies.
Projects we are proud of
Providing the skills and infrastructure for women in rural Habarana to become beekeepers – a low cost, repeatable model which has true impact.
Starting with one rural community, we coordinated training sessions and provided the apiaries to set up this initiative, which has quickly become self-sustaining.
For many of the women, this is their first taste of financial independence, adding much-welcome support to their families and the wider rural economy, as well as improving farm harvests.
Caring for the
Land
Sri Lankans have a deep-rooted connection to the land and its ability to sustain us. Pressures of modern life, pollution, litter and cheap packaging put the land under strain, and it’s our goal to help combat these threats to protect Sri Lanka’s environment for future generations.
Projects we are proud of
Taking care of our ecosystem starts in our own back yard. Colombo’s longest canal has long been a place where litter accumulates and ends up in the ocean.
We have partnered with an ocean strainer project which collects on average 1,500kg of waste every day from this canal.
Cleaning up our waterways ensures a better, safer place to live for residents of Colombo, as well as safeguarding our island’s precious marine life which includes whales and five species of turtles.
Keeping Sri
Lanka Wild
Protecting and enriching ecosystems to support biodiversity, and we work with local experts to ensure our island’s wild spaces and wildlife can thrive.
Projects we are proud of
Yala National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most loved destinations for wildlife, by both visitors and residents. However, some areas of the park have been overtaken by invasive plant species, creating an imbalance in the environment. Left unchecked this would impact not only insects and birdlife but larger mammals too.
Working alongside the FEO trust, we support community-led clearing of Block 5 of the park, removing the invasive plants to make space for indigenous plants and wildlife to flourish.
Sinharaja is Sri Lanka’s last remaining primary rainforest, home to iconic species including leopard, the endemic purple-faced langur monkey and Sri Lankan blue magpie.
Growing human populations nearby have created threats such as palm oil plantations and illegal logging. We have partnered with Rainforest Protectors to create a buffer zone around this ancient forest, giving the flora and fauna space to breathe. Twenty members of the TFG team travelled to Sinharaja to plant 500 endemic trees in this buffer zone.
Read Our Impact Report
We are proud to be the first DMC in Sri Lanka to produce an Impact Report, which includes examples of some of the projects we support, data we have collected and learnings along the way. Our commitment extends to our LGBTQI+ policies, animal and child welfare policies, and ways of working within our office and team.
We are both proud of what we have achieved so far, but know we are just getting started – there is much more to do, more to learn, new partnerships to foster and a greater impact to enrich the land, people and wildlife of our island home.
